Welcome

Welcome to our Room 22 Learning Center. My name is Liz Phillips and I have a wonderful group of instructional aides who teach with me- Roxanne Luce, Stephanie Bass and Judy Larsen. All of us are teachers, instructional aides, and parents who love working with your children.

By way of introduction, my husband (Jon) and I are originally from London, and we moved here in 1998 to stay for three years. We enjoyed the sunshine too much and decided try out the California experience for a while longer! Our three children grew up in the South Bay enjoying anything outdoors, but they also have a healthy respect for Cadbury’s chocolate, Sunday lunch and tea. We love living in Southern California and really can’t imagine living anywhere else now.

I completed my undergraduate degree at University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK, and went on to complete a teaching credential and Master’s degree at Chapman University, and then a special education credential at California State University, Fullerton. I have worked as a teacher and instructional aide all around the South Bay, and spent several years teaching in Culver City and Compton, before returning to Redondo Beach.

Teaching Philosophy

All children are capable of learning, just not always in the same ways or at the same time as others. As special educators, I believe that it is up to us to make learning accessible and to support our students using a variety of teaching methods in a comfortable setting. This might involve direct instruction in small groups, breaking tasks down into simpler parts, or working one on one with a student. Whatever the situation, we show patience, respect and humor.  We also know that each child needs to feel welcome, accepted and challenged to do the best that he or she can do, so in Room 22, we value and teach courtesy, perseverance, and kindness to others.
