Welcome to fifth grade in Room 9!
Week of December 16th
- We are visiting with our little buddies on Tuesday this week!
- Tuesday is our unit 3 math test on adding and subtracting fractions.
- On Wednesday, we are making our gingerbread houses. Students should bring in a piece of cardboard (approximately 9x12 inches) covered in foil, and the candy they agreed to with their candy groups.
- Friday is pajama day. We will watch a movie and have a treat organized by our room parents.
- Friday, students need to be sure to bring their instruments since the fifth graders are performing for the kindergarteners.
Week of December 9th
- We are going to the Griffith Park Observatory on Thursday! Students should arrive at school at 7:15. Busses will depart at 7:30. We should be back at school by dismissal at 2:30.
- The Jefferson Jog-a-thon is this Friday. Thank you to everyone who has supported the PTA.
- In language arts, we started reading our new chapter book, The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster. We are analyzing word play, and the way the author develops character and setting.
- In math we are continuing with adding and subtracting fractions. Our module test will be Tuesday, December 17th.
- In social studies, students will continue to work on their colonial projects.
Week of December 2nd
- This week is parent-teacher conferences. School is dismissed every day at 1:30.
- Monday, we started our new language arts unit, "Wordplay." Information sheets went home with your student today.
- In math, we are adding and subtracting fractions including mixed numbers.
- In social studies, the class is starting a group project on English colonial regions.
- In science, we are continuing to learn about matter, specifically how the properties of matter affect a substance.
Week of November 18th
- Camp Pali information parent meeting is Monday night at 6pm in the cafeteria
- Friday our fifth graders will have a pie feast with their kindergarten little buddies.
- We are wrapping up unit 1 of our language arts program. Students finished writing their final essay of the unit Monday and we will read and analyze more of Chief Joseph's "Lincoln Hall Speech."
- In math we are working on finding common denominators to add and subtract decimals.
- We are finishing up chapter 4 of our textbook and students will be taking the chapter test on Thursday.
- In science we are learning about separating mixtures in our unit on matter.
Week of November 11th
- Happy Veteran's Day and thank you if you are active or retired military! No school Monday
- We have our second Hands on Art lesson this Wednesday
- In language arts, we are reading Chief Joseph's "Lincoln Hall Speech" and finishing our compare and contrast essays.
- In math, we are starting fractions!
- In science we are continuing with properties of molecules.
- In social studies, we are continuing with European colonial settlements in North America
Week of November 4th
- We have two school Town Hall meetings this week, topics are Jog-a-thon Thursday and Veteran's Day Friday.
- Our end of module 2 math test on multiplication, division, and numerical expressions is this Friday, November 8th.
- Monday, November 11th is a holiday for Veteran's Day.
- We are starting our next essay on comparing and contrasting the main characters in our book, Chief Joseph and Sound of Running Feet.
- We will be doing chromatography tests in science to learn more about molecules.
Week of October 28th
- Halloween is this Thursday! School will be dismissed at 1:30 that day. No school Friday.
- We are learning about the structure of a two point essay while also readying Thunder Rolling in the Mountains during language arts.
- In math, we are continuing with long division. Our end of module test will be next Thursday, November 7th.
- In science, we are learning about molecules.
- In social studies, we are continuing to learn about settlements in the Americas during the 1500s.
Week of October 21st
- We are seeing our little buddies for the second time this Wednesday!
- In math, we are working on long division, including mental math and rounding strategies
- In language arts, we are continuing to read Thunder Rolling in the Mountains and we're working on gathering evidence for a compare and contrast essay.
- In science, we are wrapping up our astronomy unit and moving on to our unit on matter.
Week of October 14th
- This week, we have our first Hands On Art lesson on Wednesday and our first Gardening/Nutrition lesson on Friday. Thank you parent volunteers for teaching our students!
- Thursday is the Great Shakeout Earthquake drill at 10:17a.m.
- In language arts, students finished their contrast essays about how different cultures viewed the Nez Perce homeland
- In math, we are working on measurement conversion
- In social studies, we are learning about European exploration of the Americas in the 1400 and 1500s.
- In science, we are looking at annual patterns of stars we see as the Earth orbits the sun
Week of October 7th
- In language arts this week, we are continuing to read Thunder Rolling in the Mountains. We are also working on developing a compare and contrast essay.
- In math, we are continuing to work on multi-digit multiplication with both whole numbers and decimals.
- In science we are learning about annual patterns of stars we see as the Earth orbits the sun.
- In social studies, we are learning about European exploration in the 1400s.
Week of September 30
- This is a short week for us! No school Thursday and Friday for Rosh Hashanah.
- We are working on multiplying multi-digit number this week
- In language arts, we are starting to read our unit novel, Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O'Dell and Elizabeth Hall.
- In science, we are discussing patterns of the moon's orbit and the Earth's orbit.
Week of September 23
- We are meeting our kindergarten buddies on Wednesday of this week!
- Running Club started Monday of this week
- Students should be bringing band instruments Tuesdays and Fridays now
- In language arts, we are reading/listening to two Native American stories as well as comparing and contrasting the main characters of each.
- In math, we are taking our Module 1 test on Tuesday, then beginning Module 2 on Wednesday
- In social studies, students are presenting their research on Native American regions
- In science, we are learning about gravity and the pattern of the Earth's orbit
Week of September 16
- Mrs. Butler out Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week
- Representative from Battle of the Books came to room 9 Wednesday to encourage students to participate this year.
- In math, we are strengthening our understanding of multiplying and dividing with decimals.
- In social studies, students are working on group projects that they will present next week.
- Picture Day is September 18th
Week of September 9
- We are continuing to build knowledge about the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) to support our comprehension of upcoming texts. We are also learning about the structure of an informative paragraph.
- In math, we are learning about adding and subtracting with decimals.
- In science, we are writing our first scientific explanation and continuing with our understanding of the patterns of Earth and sky.
- In social studies we are learning more about the first cultures in the Americas.
Week of September 2
- No school Monday for Labor Day
- Back to School Night is this Thursday. Presentations at 5:30 and 6:15 p.m.
- This week, we are working on writing a summary in language arts. We are also continuing to build knowledge about the conflict between settlers and Native American tribes of the West in the 1800s.
- In math, we are developing our understanding of decimals and taking our first mid-module test.
- In science we are continuing our unit on the patterns of Earth and sky by learning about the distance of the stars and light pollution.

Week 8/26:
Week 2 and we are getting used to our new classroom.
- In math, we have started our first unit and are learning about decimal place value to the thousandths place.
- In language arts, we have started our first unit, "Cultures in Conflict." We are building knowledge about the term "culture" and the history of people who lived in North America in the 1800s.
- In science, we have started our first unit, Patterns of Earth and Sky. We are learning about the size and distance of stars to understand why we don't see stars (other than the sun) during daytime.
- The class had their first p.e. lesson this Monday with Coach B. Music with Mr. Buchen will begin next Tuesday.
Week of August 21:
Here we go! We are spending these first few days getting to know each other and the classroom routines and procedures.
